Asian Dumplings

This year, Valentine’s day also happens to be the first day of the Chinese New Year.  This is a special year for me, as it is the year of the Tiger, my astrological sign.  I’m hoping to celebrate by making a dim sum spread, which if all goes as planned will include several different kinds of dumplings.  Dumplings are traditionally eaten in many regions of China for the New Year, as they are said to be stuffed full of good luck by their preparers.

Probably the most intimidating factor of dumpling making is the dumpling folding.  So, I’ve been doing some preparation for the 14th by researching different folding techniques. Yesterday Nate and I tried our hands at folding jaiozi (potsticker) style dumplings by making kimchi dumplings for a good friend’s Asian potluck birthday celebration.  They were considerably easier than either of us anticipated, and fun to make too!  Here’s the video I referenced, which has instructions for two other styles of dumplings as well.
