Asparagus Awakening

6 Apr

This is the very first sign of life from the asparagus that was planted in mid-February!  Nate and I both worked our asses off digging out the deep holes needed to plant the asparagus crowns (although I admit that he did do more work than I did).  It took most of the day and by the time we were finished, it was beginning to get dark.  The next day I planted the asparagus myself while he was at work.  For some reason, I had been convinced since then that I made a mistake while planting and had accidentally killed it.  I have been secretly fretting for a month and a half that the asparagus would never surface.  I was so surprised and relieved when I checked in on it today and saw this spear poking up through the earth.  Better yet, it’s not the only one!

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean we’ll soon be feasting on asparagus.  Asparagus is one of the only perennial vegetables, so it’s necessary to let it establish itself for a year or two before you harvest.  Still, this is a great sign for a tasty future!
