Three Cheers for Sungold

4 Apr

I’ve been hesitant to post a picture of any of my seedlings for fear of “jinxing” them, as if the garden gods would place a curse on my plants the moment I bragged about them just the slightest bit.  I’m risking it to post a picture of these little sungold tomato starts.  These babies are currently my pride and joy.  They are the furthest along of all my seedlings due to the great greenhouse tumble of early March.  Thankfully, these little guys were inside due to the cold weather at the time.  Although they were only three days old when we replanted all of the lost seedlings, they have still been leading the pack in size and leaf development.

When I picked up a sungold seed packet at a local nursery, my mom proclaimed that I would never be able to start tomatoes from seed with our Oregon weather.  But I wanted to give it a go after watching an episode of River Cottage where Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and his motley crew declared the sungolds to be the tastiest toms at their tomato festival.  So far, the sungold seedlings seem to be holding their own against the nasty winter blues and I’m crossing my fingers that tasty, truly homegrown tomatoes are on their way!
